How to Come Up With Creative Fundraising Ideas
I am currently reading a very stimulating book, “A Whack on the Side of the Head” by Roger von Oech. This book describes different ideas and exercises to help you get your creative juices flowing.
A great example (on page 193) is about how Owen Dennis, a member of Christ-church in New Zealand, let a random piece of information stimulate his fundraising thinking. He wanted to come up with a really creative fundraising idea, but he was blocked.
So what did he do? He decided to flip a book randomly, and whatever page he landed on would be the page where he found his inspiration. So he flipped open the very book “A Whack on the Side of the Head: How You Can Be More Creative,” and it opened on page 50. There was a picture on the page of two workers climbing up ladders.
Now he had his inspiration, but how was he going to apply this image to create a solid fundraising idea? He got a picture in his mind of the Vicar of his church climbing a ladder to the bell tower.
So he got the Vicar, Reverend Simon Ballantyne, to climb up and spend 48 hours in the bell tower – “a step nearer heaven.” With a smile, some books and a radio, the Reverend was able to hold out the full 48 hours! And believe it or not, this event helped the church raise over $6,000!
So next time you’re blocked when it’s time to come up with a creative fundraising idea, just remember this one. You never know what you might come up with!
