The hot summer months are a great time for hot summer fundraising, but have you taken health and safety into account?  Read these hot tips and find out.

Staying safe and having fun are key for summer fundraising, so here are our top tips for making sure your summer fundraiser is as safe and healthy as it is successful:

Stay hydrated

At fundraising sales and events, be sure to have plenty of water on hand for you and your group.  Juice boxes are a convenient, and yummy treat, but most juices are full of sugar, and nothing beats pure water for quick hydration on a hot day.

Cover up

Hats, light colored clothing, and lots of sunscreen will keep your group from feeling the burn of too much sun.  Remember to reapply sunscreen as directed, and keep those hats on!  A hot head can lead to headaches and fatigue.

Look for shade

When choosing a location for a fundraising sale, look for a place that has shady coverage, or at least a shady spot nearby, and within sight of adult leaders where overheated group members can rest and rejuvenate.

Stick together

On a sunny day, the temptation to run and play is irresistible for most kids.  Before you set out on a fundraising sale or activity, sit down with your group and remind them to stick together and always stay in sight of adult leaders.  If your group doesn’t have a buddy system, this would be a good time to get one started.

Take breaks

A whole afternoon filled with exciting fundraising activities can be a lot of fun!  But remember that it’s easy to get tired and overheated in the summer, so schedule plenty of breaks.  A great idea is to plan at least one activity that involves sitting down indoors, or in a shady spot.  Your group can rest and re-energize without stopping the fun!

Plan snacks

Eating several small snacks throughout the day is the ideal way to keep your energy up on a hot day.  Eat lots of fruits and vegetables as they also contain water for hydration, and avoid heavy foods that can make you feel sluggish.  Jell-O is a yummy, cost-efficient treat for kids, and contains plenty of water.  Add fresh fruit to your recipe and you’ve got the perfect summer snack!
